Salutations Saucer Slingers,

The disc golf course at Hellyer Park is looking sharp after the recent weed-cutting expedition by the Park & Recreation Department of Santa Clara County. You can help the course look even better by participating in the WORKDAY, SATURDAY, JUNE 29TH, 10AM – 2PM. Join us and bring your chain saws, weed whackers, gloves and a friend. We’ll do general clean-up and work specifically around some tee areas to make the place even prettier. The next scheduled workday (workdays occur on the 5th Saturday of a month that has 5 Saturdays) is August ~ However, that Saturday falls on Labor Day Weekend and we will NOT have a workday on August 31st See you at the end of November, maybe, as that Saturday is on Thanksgiving Weekend. We’ll have another newsletter out before the end of the year to keep you posted.

Looking back at the elections that were held in February, 2002, the 5 incumbents retained their positions and 2 new Board Members were added to the Board of Directors of the Silicon Valley Disc Golf Club. The newest members are Jef Wind and Eric Stachnick. They join existing Directors Jim Challas, Doug Koms, Scott Van Tyle, George Marinos and Mark Bruce. Jef and Eric have formed the Willow Glen High School Disc Golf Club (they’re art teachers at Willow Glen High) and have helped to make the course at Hellyer a positive experience for many players.

The Monthly Tournament conducted by Mark Bruce continues to be a success in
developing players as well as developing our bank account. We currently have about
$1,600 in our checking account and we average about $150 per month in income from the
Monthly! Thanks everybody.

The most recent Hole Sponsorship is coming from Play It Again Sports, hole #11. Play It Again Sports has new discs for sale at their store on Camden Avenue in San Jose as well as their store in Mt. View. Welcome our latest hole sponsor with a visit. There’s just one remaining hole available for sponsorship, lucky # 13. Hopefully, next year, we’ll have the other 9 holes available for sponsorship.

We’re sketching out plans for a bridge to cross Coyote Creek so that we’ll be able to at long last open the remaining course at Hellyer. The bridge will be temporary and can be placed in use from mid-April through mid-October. Our design must meet the satisfaction of the Park & Rec Dept. and then we must acquire approval from the Santa Clara Valley Water District, State of California Fish & Game Department and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to cross Coyote Creek without altering the stream bed. Cost for the bridge is about $3,000, the remaining course costs are $5,000 and we’ll spend about $4,000 on tee pads. Get your wallets ready for next year!

See you at the course.

Happy Holidays Hurlers,

The Silicon Valley Disc Golf Club is having a WORKDAY, Saturday, December 29. We’ll meet at 10 AM near the wood bulletin board at hole #10. Bring your work gloves, rakes, hoes, chain saws, wheel barrows and shovels. We’ll be planting more bushes and picking up wood debris and moving rocks around and generally making Hellyer just a liffle more beautiflil. If we get rained-out on December 29, then we’ll reschedule for the following Saturday, January 5.

Speaking of beautitul, Hellyer Disc Golf Course is looking its finest in the 4 years of its existence. We recently received some help from Santa Clara County Park & Recreation Department when they cut down the weeds and tall grasses in September. We had been spending $300 each time we had contracted with a private party to do the job of weed abatement. The Department will also help us in the springtime with a weed cut at no charge and we say Thank You!

We’ve acquired 3 additional hole-sponsors and have 2 remaining holes that are available for sponsorship. Holes #11 and #13 are available for sponsorship @ $250 per hole and you’ll have your name and or message displayed for at least a year on both the front and back tee signs. A BIG THANK YOU is extended to the 3 latest editions of sponsors that include Nicole Hughes (#12), Mike & Judy Maybell (#15) and Drew Byers (#16).

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU also goes out to Mark Bruce for his continuing efforts in conducting the Monthly Tournament that’s held on the 2nd Saturday of the month.
With the contribution of $5.00 to the Club in addition to their entry fee, the regulars at the monthly are helping us average about $100 per month in income to the Club.

The Annual Meeting of the Silicon Valley Disc Golf Club is scheduled for Saturday, February 2 @ 9 AM. The location of the meeting is the world headquarters of the Club:
3880 5. Bascom Avenue #115, San Jose. The election of the Board of Directors will take place and your proxy is enclosed. Please send in your completed proxy so that we can have a quorum for the election. You’re welcome to attend.

Enclosed are your proxy, membership renewal form and a postage-paid envelope. Yoji can enclose your 2002 membership dues and your completed proxy and renewal form in the envelope. Thanks for your continuing support.

See you at the course!

Dear Disc Devotees,A WORK DAY is scheduled for SATURDAY, JUNE 30TH, a fifth Saturday. Bring your work gloves and tools (chain saws and weed wackers are needed) for the 10 AM start. The primary goal is to pile rocks in a central area in anticipation of the weed abatement work that’ll be done later this summer. We’ll add more wood to the wood pile as we clean up on various parts of the course. We’ll also stake out and put orange engineering tape around the rose and toyon bushes so they they don’t get cut during the weed abatement work. There are two more fifth Saturdays this year, one in September and the other is in December.

It appears as though we’re going to receive HELP FROM the COUNTY OF SANTA CLARA PARKS DEPARTMENT on major WEED ABATEMENT work. This will be a big plus as it’ll help us budget-wise in not having to hire an outside contractor to do this work. Jim Challas walked the course with the Parks Maintenance Supervisor to look at areas that need to be prepped before the County sends out their tractor. Currently the weed abatement equipment for the County is down and won’t be repaired until mid July. Hopefully we’ll see the equipment up and weeds down in August.

It also appears as though we’re going to receive HELP FROM the COUNTY OF SANTA CLARA EXECUTIVE OFFICE in our effort to establish a DONATION BOX on-site at Hellyer. Jim Challas has been working with an aide to Supervisor Jim Beall since January and it seems like we’re getting close to seeing the allowance of a donation box. If we’re permitted to place the “iron ranger” at the course will cost us about $400 for a style that’s similar to the box at De La Veaga. Hopefully we’ll have some “iron ranger” installation work on the work day in September or December.

The MONTHLY TOURNAMENT on the SECOND SATURDAY is becoming firmly established through the efforts of MARK BRUCE. Both amateurs and pros are enjoying a day of friendly competition while they benefit the development of the course at Hellyer through their donation of $5.00 per player. We’re averaging about $100 per month in donations from the monthly toumament.

Our next major MONETARY GOAL will occur this fall as we build our funds for the INSURANCE PREMIUM tharll be due by the end of October. The cost is $750.00 and your donations are tax deductible. Our tax returns for the year 2000 have been filed and our corporate house is in good order. THANK YOU all for your donations of money and time in maintaining disc golf at Hellyer Park. More and more people are discovering the joys of playing a round at Hellyer and that’s due to your efforts. See you at the course.
